outside reading #25

Today I read an article about the oldest man in the United States. His name was George Francis and he was 112 when he died on Saturday. George died at a nursing home in Sacramento because of heart failure. His son, Anthony Francis who is 81, says that George was born on June 6th, 1896 in New Orleans. George had to live through much of is life without his wife, Josephine Johnson Francis, who died at the age of 63. Although George Francis was the oldest man in the United States, the oldest person in the world is 115. Her name is Maria de Jesus and she lives in Portugal. This is according to a UCLA gerontologist, Dr. Stephen Coles, who keeps a list of the world’s oldest people.
It is hard to imagine living for 115+ years. So many people struggle to live a normal length life. This just goes to show that anything is possible and that any age can be met.

Today I read an article about the Twins defense and their need for a third baseman. Even though the Twins are known for their exceptional defense, they struggled last season. They committed 108 errors, which is their highest total since 2001. Players like Carlos Gomez (center field), Delmon Young (left field), Alexi Casilla (second base), and Brian Buscher (third base); all had difficulties in the field. The Twins are especially having a hard time finding a solid third baseman. Cuddyer, Batista, and Punto each played in the position one year, but none of them were very good. Punto was definitely the best and he still plays around the infield and Cuddyer was moved to right field, where he is a star with one of the strongest arms in Major League Baseball. Lamb started out at third base year, but he didn't live up to the Twins standards, so Harris and Buscher traded off at the position. Neither of them were amazing, but they were definitely an improvement. The two of them have been getting exceptionally better at offense and are slowly improving their defensive skills. Even though the Twins had a poor defensive year last year, they still did really well. Hopefully this upcoming season will be better then the last.

Today I read an article about Barack Obama’s appointments to his cabinet. The article talked about the fact that he was appointing people with a lot of experience. As Charles Babington, the author of the article stated, bringing people with him to the White House that have experience will make the American people feel safer. I completely agree with this. Having people that know what is going on and have dealt with it first hand makes me feel much more secure, but…. During Obama’s campaign he was all about change. Yes change is very popular right now, but when Obama appoints people to his cabinet that have been in Washington for a long time, doesn’t that go back on the CHANGE he spoke about. Don’t get me wrong, I am glad that Obama is going to be working with people with experience, but I think that he didn’t really speak realistically during his campaign. Don’t take this the wrong way, I am not saying that Obama is wrong for appointing the people that he is (I am actually a relieved he picked people with experience), but I think that he should have been realistic during his campaign because he can’t cover up mistakes with wonderful speeches when he is president.

I have continued to read Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer.
In the chapter that I read today, Bella is at the Cullen’s house. It is the day of the fight and Bella and Edward are alone. They are very glad they get to have time for just the two of them. After Jacob had given Bella the wolf charm at her graduation, Edward had been wanting to give her something too. He ends up giving her a jewel, diamond like, charm. To Bella, it is the most amazing thing that she has ever seen. Edward tells her that it was his moms and that makes it all the more special to Bella. As the two talk, Bella has something on her mind that she really wants to talk about. Edward doesn’t even have a clue about what it is. Finally Edward understands what Bella wants, but says they would have to be married first. After arguing, Bella finally agrees. Edward thinks this is good because, first of all he wants to get married and second of all it will make Bella more excited for their marriage. In the last part of the chapter, Edward shows Bella the ring that he is planning to give her when they get married. It was also Edward’s mom’s ring and it is the most beautiful thing that Bella has ever seen. Even though Bella already has the ring, Edward proposes to her and she accepts.

I have continued to read Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer.
In the chapter that I read today, it is the day after Bella’s graduation party. Bella ends up sleeping for most of the day, but nonetheless, Edward stays with her the whole time. When she wakes up Edward tells her that she had been talking in her sleep. Bella isn’t too embarrassed about this, so she decides to go and have some breakfast. While she eats her Pop Tarts, Bella asks Edward about the fight. She says that either she has to be in the field or Edward can’t fight. Bella feels selfish about this, but she knows that she won’t be able to just sit and wait to see if Edward survives. Edward tells her that he wont fight and he says that it is probably the best thing to do from his perspective too. While Edward talks to jasper about the fight, Alice comes over to Bella’s house. She says that her whole family is going to be gone this weekend. Charlie offers that she could stay at their house. After many kicks in the foot, Bella says that there really wouldn’t be a comfortable place for her to sleep, so Charlie says that Bella should stay at the Cullen’s for the weekend. This is exactly what Alice wanted because she wanted Bella to be away from Charlie and with Edward during the fight. Later that night, Bella goes to the clearing to watch them prepare for the fight. When Edward goes off to help Jasper, Bella spends sometime talking to Jacob.

I have continued reading Eclipse by Stephanie Meyer.
In the section that I read today, the Cullen's and the werewolves meet in the clearing. This is the same clearing where the Cullen's play baseball and where they first met James, Laurent, and Victoria. When the werewolves show up, there are four more then there were just the other day, which is good because that means there will be more of them to fight against the newborns. While the group is in the clearing they discuss what they are going to do. After jasper teaches the rest of the Cullen's how to fight newborns, Jacob and Edward decide what to do with Bella. Jacob insists that she stays in La Push. Edward thinks this is a bad idea because she will have a trail of her scent leading there. Jake decides that he will cover up her trail and it works,so they decided to let her stay in la Push along with Charlie. Edward is more comforted when he learns that three werewolves will be guarding Bella and because the werewolves can read each others minds, it will be like have a cell phone that can go any distance. They also decide to leave Bella scent in the clearing so that the newborns will be distracted by her. Jasper says that Bella should be in the clearing, so that killing the newborns will be extremely easy, but of course Edward would never agree to an idea that would put Bella in harms way.

I have continued reading Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer.
In the chapter that I read today, Bella is having her graduation party. As the party goes on it isn't as bad as she thought it would be. She talked to pretty much everyone, but with Edward always at her side, going closer to her when he heard thoughts that he did not approve of. While Bella is talking to Jessica Edward goes into the kitchen to talk to Alice. Bella gets so preoccupied with what Alice and Edward were talking about that she left Jessica. When she got into the kitchen, Edward hurried up stairs to talk to Carlisle and Alice followed soon after. meanwhile, Jacob shows up at the party, so Bella goes to get him to leave. He refuses along with Quil and Embry, whom he brought along. After he gives Bella her gift, which was a bracelet with a carving a wolf on it, Alice returns to talk to Bella. Jacob thinks that he should be a part of whatever is going on, but Jasper makes him calm down. Alice explains that they must go to Seattle because the army is coming to Forks for Bella. When Jacob hears this he really wants to help and Alice agrees. Even though Bella doesn't want Jacob and his friends to get involved, the wolves and vampires make a plan to meet at three o'clock that morning near the Sheriffs building.

I read another chapter in Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer today.
Not much happened. It was the day of Bella's High School Graduation. Before the ceremony, Bella is trying to find something to wear when Alice shows up. Alice brings her something to wear, but while they are talking Bella realizes something. She realizes that the vampire that was in her room and the one making the army of newborn vampires in Seattle are related. The vampire came to Bella's house to see if he or she could get past Alice's senses and to give to newborn vampires Bella's scent. Bella figures out that the newborn vampires are coming to kill her, not to hurt any of the Cullen's. After the ceremony, Bella tells Edward what she figured out. He realizes that he is right and is completely shocked and worried out of his mind. After Bella and Charlie go out to dinner, Bella goes to her party at the Cullen's, which she has been dreading ever since it was planned.

I have continued reading Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer.
Bella is currently having a “slumber party” with Alice. Edward has left for the weekend to go hunting and he wants to make sure that Bella is safe, so he forces her to stay at his house for the duration of his trip. During Bella’s stay at the Cullen’s house, Rosalie tells Bella the story of her life and how she became a vampire. Bella can see why Rosalie wants Bella to stay human and have the life that Rosalie never had. The next day, Jacob shows up at Bella’s school and takes her to the beach. Jake talks about how each werewolf has a “soul mate”. Jacob says that he will never have a soul mate because his was Bella and she is already in love with Edward. When Edward returns from his hunt, Bella expects him to be mad about her seeing Jake, but he isn’t. He decides that he is going to trust Bella. When Bella returns to her house after her stay at the Cullen’s she finds her room to be clean and things to be missing. When Edward comes to her house, he can smell that a vampire had been in her house, but he doesn’t recognize the smell. This sends Bella into a panic because that means that a vampire wants to kill her. Edward says that he wont let anything happen to her no matter what happens and Bella can’t not believe him. After all, he is an immortal vampire.

i think we are suppose to write about Cesar Chavez. Chavez was a very determined man. He kept marching all the way to Sacramento even though he had hurt himself. He fasted in order to promote non violence. Doctors thought that he could die if he didn't eat, but Chavez stuck with it and people eventually listened to him. Cesar was also a very cooperative man. He worked well with the people on strike and the others that were supporting them. He didn't lash out at the growers, he only took non violent steps toward getting the proper wages and working conditions. Chavez is also a man with great intelligence. Even though he never had proper schooling, he understood human nature. Cesar Chavez was also great with words. He inspired workers to fight for what they wanted and needed. He also spoke his message in court and in Sacramento. With all of these characteristics, the one that showed the most was his strong will. He never gave up. Even though he didn't have a lawyer or anyone to defend him, he still stood up against the grape growers. Cesar Chavez was a very prestige man. He had the courage of 50 men. He did everything he had to in order to get his message across and to have his conditions met. I think that Chavez showed the courage that everyone wish they could have.

outside reading #15

I started reading Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer.
Edward is very excited about Bella going to college, so he keeps giving her more applications to fill out. Bella says she doesn’t want to fill out any more because she already got accepted at a University in Alaska and that was good enough because it was rarely sunny their so it would be perfect for Edward and soon to be Bella. Bella has been grounded since she got back from saving Edward, but her dad finally let’s her go. Edward decides that Bella should go visit her mom before she graduates. Edward goes with her to Jacksonville. Bella’s mom notices that Edward is very protective of Bella and she thinks it is very strange. Bella knows the truth, but tells her mom that she is just seeing things. After getting back from Jacksonville, Jacob shows up at Bella’s school. He comes to tell her that Victoria is back and is still trying to kill Bella. Jacob also says that Edward already knew this and that is why he wanted her to go to Florida. After Jacob leaves, Bella passes notes with Edward and finds out the truth. He didn’t tell her about Victoria because she didn’t need to be afraid because he would never let anything happen to her. Bella is satisfied with this, but is still nervous about Victoria being back.

I finally finished New Moon! I read for about three hours today, but I finished!
During the final parts of the book, Bella comes home to find Alice at her house. The next day the two of them find out that Edward has gone to Italy to get himself killed. He thinks that Bella is dead because Alice had seen Bella jumping off of a cliff in her vision. Bella did jump off of a cliff, but for fun, and she survives. Alice and Bella go to Italy and find Edward. The three of them have to go talk with the other, most powerful vampires. The powerful vampires say that they can be free, but Bella must be turned into a vampire. When the three get back to Forks, Bella decides to go and talk to the whole Cullen family. The family votes on whether or not Bella should be turned into a vampire. Edward and Rosalie say no, but everyone else says yes. It is decided that Carlisle will bite her, but not until after she graduates. At the very end of the book, Jacob shows up at Bella’s house with her motorcycle. Edward is very protective of Bella. Jacob says that they can’t be friends anymore because Edward is back. Jacob also reminds them of the treaty that says that if the Cullen’s BITE a human, the treaty is broken, which would interfere with Bella’s plan to become a vampire.
This book was amazing. I can’t wait to see the movie tomorrow. I would recommend this book to anyone.

outside reading #13

Today I read another section in New Moon by Stephenie Meyer.
"And then to discover the key to hallucinations." This quote describes what happened in the book. It started off with Bella and Jacob getting on their newly fixed motorcycles. Bella can't really get the hang of it, so Jacob has to help her. After many failures, Bella finally gets going. She is going really slow for about 5 minutes and the whole time she is hearing Edward's voice in her head telling her to stop and get off the motorcycle. When Bella decides she wants to go faster so that she can hear his voice more, she doesn't see the turn on the road an goes crashing into the woods. Jacob finds her with the motorcycle on top off her. The two go to the hospital and say that Bella tripped in Jacob's garage and hit her head on a hammer. After getting her seven stitches, she starts thinking about riding the bike again so that she can hear Edward. The next day, Jacob says that they should take a break from the bikes. Reluctantly, Bella agrees, so the two decide to go hiking. Bella decides that they will go look for the meadow where the Cullen's had played baseball.
The quote shows that Bella figures out that in order to hear Edward's voice, she needs to do dangerous things. The more dangerous it is, the more she will hear his voice. This drives her to find the most dangerous things possible and do them, just so she knows that he really did exist.

I read an article on the Kare 11 website about the U of M Children's Hospital. The article said that only only one child has had a heart transplant since 2005. This is shocking because the U of M Children's Hospital is the only hospital in the Twin Cities that performs heart transplants. It turns out that some children have had to go to other hospitals because the Children's Hospital takes too long to set a date for the transplant. There is a system that shows which patient needs the heart the most. 1A is the most urgent and then 1B. When kids at the Children's Hospital have been moved up to the 1A list, the doctors have moved them back down because of the surgeons vacation schedule. THAT IS RIDICULOUS! These kids should not have to be put on a lower list because of the doctors vacations. The system obviously has a major flaw. There was a story of a little girl named Abby who was born with a birth defect. The medicine she was on out her on the 1A list because it compromised her immune system. This seems right, but the family wanted to have her at home because they thought that would be the best place for her to be. But, their doctors said that if they took care of her at home, she would have to be put on the 1B list. Abby, later went to a hospital in Missouri to have the heart transplant because she couldn't get one in Minnesota. Later it was stated that Abby could have still been on the 1A list if she was taken care of at home. Abby's doctors made a huge mistake that could have cost Abby her life.

I was reading the newspaper this morning and I came across an article about the Minnesota Senate race. In the article it stated that 32 absentee ballots were found. The Coleman campaign filed a lawsuit that questioned the truthfulness of these ballots. They think that this ballots were just filled out after November fourth. From my point of view I can see where the campaign is coming from. It is hard to believe that these 32 ballots just mysteriously just showed up. The Franken campaign says that it is only fair that these ballots are counted, otherwise we would be denying the right of those people to vote. A chief district court judge in Ramsey County came to the confirmation that the temporary restraining order on the ballots, wanted by the Coleman campaign, was not going to happen. It is very hard to know if these ballots were really filled out before November 4th or whether people filled them out after they heard that the race was to close to call. These ballots might change the outcome of this race, so I don't think that it is fair that the fate of the candidates lie in the hands of 32 ballots that were not counted on the day of the election.

After listening to John McCain's concession speech last night, I decided to take a closer look at it. I read his whole concession speech to really understand what he was saying.
Throughout the speech he talks about how this campaign has been so long and difficult. This is completely true. This campaign has gotten so many peoples attention because of the direction our country has been going in for the past couple of years. McCain also talks about the respect he has for Obama. He talks about how Obama inspired the hopes of so many people, by reminding them that hey do have a voice in the election and that every voice counts. I do believe that every vote counts and that everyone should get out there and have their voice heard, but I wont even get into how I believe the electoral votes take away from the people. I also liked how McCain urged Americans, even the ones that supported him, to congratulate Obama and wish him the best of luck. I also appreciated the thanks that McCain gave to all of his supporters. Even though he wanted the outcome to be different, he was still very grateful of all of us who believed in him. "A lost election will never mean more to me than the privilege of your faith and friendship." This quote made me smile. I love how McCain wasn't angry that he lost, he was very calm and just wanted to wish Obama the best of luck.
"to not despair of our present difficulties, but to believe, always, in the promise and greatness of America, because nothing is inevitable here.
Americans never quit. We never surrender.
We never hide from history. We make history."
I think that this quote shows how optimistic McCain is. He knows that we will never stop fighting for what we believe in and he knows that everyone can make a difference.
Even thought McCain lost the election, I think that he was very classy with his speech. He let everyone know that Obama will be a great president and that he will do his best to help our country. This speech was amazing, even though I wish he could have been saying his acceptance speech.

outside reading #9

Today I read an article about the Minnesota Senate race.
The article, which was in the Star Tribune, was about the recent accusations that money was wired to Coleman's wife through business. The article says that a businessman names Nasser Kazeminy "steered" $75,000 from a company in Houston to a Minneapolis insurance company that employs Senator Coleman's wife. This accusation turned into a law suit that was filed on Monday.
Coleman says that this is "an 11th hour attack". He stats that Al Franken can make ugly smears at him, but is crossing the line when he brings the Coleman family into it. Franken claims that he or his campaign didn't do anything wrong. The Indepedent Party candidate Dean Barkley says that these accusations just prove how dirty this campaign has been. I have to say, I agree with Barkley. This campaign has been horrid. Every other commercial I see is a negative message about coleman or Franken. It is getting ridiculous if you ask me. Of course I prefer one candidate over the other, but this whole campaign has had a negative effect for both candidates. We all know the negative ads are a part of elections, but this race between Franken and Coleman has gotten out of hand. I will be so glad when Wednesday morning comes and there will be no more political ads.

outside Reading Assignment #8

National polls tighten a bit; Obama hangs in to lead in battlegrounds:

Today I read an article about the polls in the 2008 election. The article stated that McCain is gaining ground on Obama. Obama had an 8 point lead on Saturday, but according to the Rear Clear Politics National poll average, it has decreased to 5.9. Another poll, Rasmussen poll, says that Obama is ahead by only 3 points. The Reuters/Zogby/C-SPAN poll says that since last week Obama has gone from a 12 point lead to a 5 point lead. The Gallup poll stats that Obama has a three point lead, unlike his 7 point lead from last week.

This article taught me a few things. First of all, it showed me that all polls are different. We can't really tell which candidate is ahead until we get the actual votes. Polls might comfort some voters, but scare others. The truth is, polls don't really matter. What matters is going a making your vote count.
This article also showed me that anything can happen during an election. Throughout all of September and October, many people have thought that Obama is going to win the election and become the next president, but this just goes to show that nothing is for certain. You can't count another person out, in this case McCain, until the election is over.

I think that a close race is more interesting, rather then having one candidate win by a landslide. Of course I am happy to see this poll because I am a McCain supporter, but none the less, both candidates have the right to fight to the end.
Both McCain and Obama are fighting for what they believe in so all that is left to say is, it is in our hands. We decide who is our next president, these polls don't decide for us and neither does the media (don't even get me started on the media. Can you say BIASED?!). Anyways, elections are very important and they are never over until all of the votes have been counted on November 4th.

Outside Reading Assignment #7

I read another chapter in New Moon by Stephanie Mater (pg. 159-181)

" I'd come full circle, and now everything felt like an echo-an empty echo, devoid of the interest it used to have" (Meyer 167). This quote shows how Bella's life is turning out to be just like last year when she first came to Forks.
In this chapter Bella spends a lot of time at Jacob's while he is finishing the bikes, but she also has other things going in in her life. At work she talks with Mike a lot and he begins to like her again just like he did last year, but also like last year, Bella likes someone else. Instead of Edward, this year it is Jacob. Bella and Mike decide to just be friends. As Bella thinks about how her life right now is very similar to last year, she decides to go to Edward's house. When she gets their it is completely abandoned and she can't stand to even go inside of it. Later in the week, Jake finishes the bikes and the two set out to practice riding them. On their way to go practice, they notice four guys jumping off of a cliff. Bella freaks out, but Jake tells her that they are just cliff diving and that people do it all of the time, but Jake seems a little mad after this incident. Bella asks him what is wrong. He finally tells her how one of the guys that was on the cliff, named Sam, is the leader of this group in La Push. Jake doesn't like this group and they keep bothering him and treating him differently. He also mentions how his friend Embry had missed school for a couple of weeks and now he is back and he is hanging out with Sam's group and refuses to talk to Jacob. The two know there is something strange going on, but can't figure it out.
The quote is completely true. Last year Bella was new and Mike was the only one that would talk with her. Mike really liked Bella, but she turned him down for Edward. Also she found Edward and fell in love with him. If you think about, it is almost exactly like what is going on now. Mike is the only one that talks to Bella. Mike still likes Bella, but she turns him down for someone else. That someone else would be Jacob, who she is beginning to REALLY like.

Outside Reading Assignment #6

I continued with New Moon by Stephanie Meyer (p. 137-159)

"... I was going to see Jacob again today. The thought made me feel... hopeful (Meyer 143). This quote shows how Bella is moving on with her life, even though Edward is gone. In this chapter that I read, Bella is spending her time at Jacob's house where she is watching him fix the motorcycles that she had gotten previously. Bella meets Jacob's two best friends, Quil and Embry, who are both intrigued when they see Bella at Jacob's. Charlie is pleased to hear that Bella is going to spend more time with Jacob because he wants her to get out and enjoy life. The next day Bella and Jacob drive around talking for two hours on their way to get parts for the bikes. When they return, they continue to work on the bikes and are later surprised by Charlie being at Jacob's house. When Bella and Jacob come to Charlie holding hands, Charlie smiles because he thinks that Bella and Jacob really like each other. Bella eats dinner at Jacob's house and finds that she doesn't want to leave because she is having such a good time, but decides she will see him again tomorrow. At school the next day Bella, who has been quiet since Edward left, breaks out and joins the conversation at the lunch table. She ends up talking to Angela and Mike, but Jessica and Lauren still don't like her.
This quote shows that Bella has hope for the future. It shows that Bella is looking forward instead of looking in her past, meaning Edward. This is very good for her because she needs to move on with her life and find new meaning. This quote also shows that Bella might have a connection with Jacob. It isn't the same connection that she had with Edward, but it is just as strong and meaningful if not more.

Musical Heroes

I chose to do my project about musicians and how they effect our daily lives and what impact music has on our thoughts and choices. Music is a hero for so many people for the following reasons:
1. It allows you to express yourself
2. It is unique (there are no rules and it keeps changing)
3. It has its place all around the world.

http://www.quotegarden.com/music.html (for the next two quotes)

If a composer could say what he had to say in words he would not bother trying to say it in music. ~Gustav Mahler

This quote is saying that music is a way to express things that can't be expressed by words. It is saying that somethings are so hard to say that music is a way to just let your feelings and thoughts be shown to the world. This quote is saying that music is like a best friend who understands anything you say, even though it might not make any sense to anyone else. Music is something that is within you and that you can express yourself with.

A painter paints pictures on canvas. But musicians paint their pictures on silence. ~Leopold Stokowski

This quote showed me that music has no restrictions. Music doesn't have any boundaries, like painting where you must paint on a canvas or some type of surface. This quote showed me that music comes from the heart and allows you to express what you are feeling at any point in your life. This quote shows that musicians are not confined to certain rules and regulations, they are able to create their own original artworks without having to restrict their feelings because of rules.

This picture of the different ipods just shows how music has progressed. Music went from radios and records and it has evolved into portable music players like the ipod. This just shows that music is appreciated by so many people that it has been the goal of many to create music players that are more technologically advanced and will allow more music to be listened to. Since there are so many different types of music, people have their own reason to try and create a better way to listen to music.

This chart shows that there are so many different types of music. This chart showed me that people express themselves in different ways and that those different ways translate into different genres of music. The variety of genres allows people to express different emotions or events that have happened in their lives. Since people can express so many emotions, it makes music such an easy and popular way to share your problems and/or triumphs with others.

http://www.poets.org/viewmedia.php/prmMID/5819"

"I cared about music long before I cared about literature," James Merrill remarked in 1968. In fact, he knew exactly the point he began caring about music: when he was eleven-years-old, he was taken for the first time to the Metropolitan Opera House. The impact on his aesthetic education was immediate, profound, and endured throughout his career as a poet. His work is filled with references to music, both high and low. An operatic emotional intensity and keen attention to the musical textures of language via sophisticated metrical effects are consistently apparent in his poetry."

This quote from an article I read proves how music is an expression of peoples emotions. It just proves that in an ordinary person's life, they can feel the emotion that is overflowing within the music. You don't have to be a musician or an expert on music to know and feel the emotions that come from the music. The feelings that come from the music can have such a lasting impact on you that you will never forget how you felt at the moment that you first heard the song.

(The link would not work so if you go to You Tube and type in Biko, it is the first video)

Last year we watched a movie about Biko, who was a man from South Africa who was fighting for equality. This song just goes to show for one how people can express there thoughts through music, but also it shows that music is a worldly thing. This song shows that music is a part of almost every culture on the planet. Music can express struggles of one person or a group of people and this song does both. It is in honor of Biko, who gave his life fighting for equality, but it is also about the struggle of the majority of the black Africans in South Africa at the time.

http://www.musiclessonsondvd.com/famous-quotes-about-music/ (for quote)

My heart, which is so full to overflowing, has often been solaced and refreshed by music when sick and weary.
Martin Luther (1483 - 1546)

This quote, said by Martin Luther, shows that since music has no rules and can show so much emotion, it can help people get through difficult times in their lives. Music can comfort people because people can relate to the emotions being expressed in the song. The song makes people fell like they are not alone in their problems. This quote also shows that music has been around for a long time. Since music has been around for so long, it has changed and has developed more of a variety.

(The link wouldn't work so if you go to You Tube and type in South Africa Zulu Tribal Welcome Song you will be able to see it)

This video is of a South African welcome song. This shows how music is different throughout the world. It also shows that the sound of the music may be different, but the meaning is similar to some of the songs we hear in our society today. This song is about welcoming people and we have songs that are about welcoming people into our lives.

Conclusion:
This project showed me that a hero doesn't have to be a person or a group it can be actions or words, like music. Music is such an influential thing and that is what being a hero is all about. Music allows people to express their emotions, which might make them feel better along with comforting others with their words. The fact that music has no rules makes it so that everyone can have it as a hero. The free spirit of music allows everyone to enjoy some type of it. Music has changed throughout the years. From how it is played to the type of music, it has changed and that just shows how much it allows people to express themselves. Music is not just a hero for people here in the United States, but it is a hero for people all over the world. The types of music throughout the world may be different, but it provides the same sense of expression everywhere. Music is a hero that we can constantly rely on.

Outside Reading Assignment #5

This weekend I read my gym book (Fitness for Life by Charles B. Corbin and Ruth Lindsey).

The section that I was reading was about health conditions. The section started out talking about hypokinetic diseases and conditions, which are caused by a lack of physical activity. One of theses conditions was cardiovascular disease, which has been the leading cause of death in the United States since 1900 except for one year. This section also talks about atherosclerosis which is when certain substances including fats build up on the inside walls of the arteries. Arteries are used to carry blood from your heart to the rest of your body. When to much of a substance is on your artery walls, the blood supply to your heart is cut off and a heart attack occurs. Atherosclerosis can also cause a stroke, which is when blood supply is cut off to your brain. High blood pressure or hypertension is also a contributor to stroke, heart attack, and kidney damage.
This section also talks about cancer which is when uncontrolled cells invade normal cells, steal their nutrition, and interfere with the normal cell function. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the U.S, right behind cardiovascular disease. Diabetes, Type II, is also a hypokinetic condition. Diabetes is when a person's body can't regulate the sugar level in the body. Diabetes can lead to damage of the blood vessels, heart, kidneys, and eyes. It may also cause a coma or death if the level of sugar in the blood is extremely high. Two other hypokinetic conditions are obesity ( when a person has a high percentage of body fat) and osteoporosis (when the bones deteriorates and weaken).
The last thing that this section talks about is hyperkinetic conditions, which are health problems caused by too much physical activity. This includes overworking injuries, which can cause your bones, muscles, or other tissues to be damaged. These conditions also include activity neurosis, which is when people are overly concerned about getting enough exercise and are upset if they miss a regular workout. The last hyperkinetic condition that was brought up in this section was eating disorders including anorexia and bulimia.
This section showed the effects of not enough physical activity and too much. You need to find a balance between physical activity and relaxation in order to stay healthy.

Outside Reading Assignment #4

I am have continued to read New Moon by Stephanie Meyer (p. 120-136)

"It clicked together for me then. I wanted to be stupid and reckless, and I wanted to break promises" (Meyer 127). This quote explains Bella's emotions in this chapter. Throughout the chapter Bella wonders why she keeps promises. Lets face it, she made promises to Edward, but now he is gone, so what's the point in staying true to those promises. She also made promises to her father, but after all that has happened to her, she doesn't care if she breaks those promises.
Bella makes a promise to Edward, right before he leaves, saying that she will not be stupid. She also makes a promise to her father that she will never ride a motorcycle. Well, Bella decides to break both of those promises. As she is driving home from work, Bella sees two motorcycles in the Markses' yard. She asks if she can buy them, but it turns out that she gets them for free. The first step to her reckless behavior is completed, but the motorcycles do not run, so she decides to go to Jacob Black to get help to fix them up. Jacob is an old friend that has always had a crush on Bella and of course is willing to help her fix the bikes. Bella and Jacob take the bikes out of her truck, so that Jacob's dad, Billy, doesn't see them (Billy is good friends with Bella's dad). To pay for the repairs of the bikes, Bella decides to take money out of her college fund. She decides that she wants to stay in Forks, so why not use the money for something else.
Bella's actions reflect her feelings for Edward. Since Edward left, Bella has felt deserted and lonely, so she decides that she needs to do something to show that she doesn't miss Edward. She is trying to do something that will distract her from the pain of Edward's abandonment.

Outside Reading Assignment #3

I am still reading New Moon by Stephanie Meyer (p.93-120).

"Forbidden to remember, terrified to forget; it was a hard line to walk" (Meyer 117). This quote symbolizes what went on in the chapter that I read. The chapter was about Bella and the following months after her beloved Edward left her. She has been very depressed and her father Charlie has become very concerned. He confronts her one morning and tells her that he would like to send her to live with her mom Renee because living in Forks reminds her to much of Edward. Bella refuses. She claims that it would mess everything up because it is her last semester in high school and she needs to finish it. The conversation ends with Bella storming out of the house and into a angry mood.
At school Bella decides that she will ask a girl from her class named Jessica if she wants to go to a movie. She hopes this will get Charlie off of her back about being depressed and not wanting to do anything. Jessica is quite surprised when Bella talks to her because they haven't talked since Bella and Edward starting going out, but she says yes anyway.
At the movie Bella has a hard time because it starts out with a boyfriend and girlfriend and she can't help but think of Edward. She has to leave several times throughout the movie, but finally it ends. The two girls then go to McDonald's for dinner. On their walk to the restaurant, Bella sees a group of older men outside a bar. She thinks she recognizes one of them from the previous year when she was almost killed. As she gets closer to the men, she feels like she should stop. As she inches closer she hears Edward's voice telling her to stop and go back to Jessica. Bella knows he is right, but she wants to hear his voice again, so she keeps going. She finally realizes that she needs to stop and so she goes back with Jessica.
The quote has a lot to do with this situation. Bella knows that when she hears or remembers Edward's voice it hurts her inside, but she is so terrified that she will forget if she doesn't remember it. Bella has a hard time with this and spends the rest of the night trying to think about what it would be like if she forgot something about Edward.

Outside Reading Assignment #2

I am still reading New Moon by Stephanie Meyer (p. 53-84).

"It will be as if I'd never existed, he'd promised me" (Meyer 84). This quote is at the very end of the reading that I did and is an incite to what this section was about. As I have written in previous posts, Edward and Bella are boyfriend and girlfriend who are in love. Their relationship is difficult because Edward belongs to a family of vampires and is a vampire himself. In this section Edward starts to feel that he can no longer be with Bella. He feels that them being together is no longer in Bella's best interest, so he decides to leave. He comes to this conclusion because, like I said in my last post, Edward's brother Jasper attacks Bella and cuts her arm very badly. Edward realizes that he doesn't want Bella to get hurt and the only way that he can make sure of that is if he and his family leave Forks. He does end of leaving, but after he does, bella tries to follow him through the woods. She ends up getting lost and spends the whole night on the forest floor. She is found the next morning by one of the people of the search team that was made to find her.
In the quote it explains that Edward claims that it will be like he never existed. Bella knows she will never forget him. Edward on the other hand wants her to move on, so he literally takes action about erasing himself from her memories. Edward takes all of the pictures from Bella's scrapbook, so that she will not be able to look at him and dwell on what they had together. Bella doesn't want to forget him, but she realizes that Edward wants her to forget him.

Outside Reading Assignment #1

I am currently reading the book New Moon by Stephanie Meyer (p. 30-52).

"Edward's face was whiter than bone as he wheeled to crouch over me, taking a clearly defensive position. A low growl slid from between his clenched teeth" (Meyer 30). This quote is taking place right after Bella, the main character, cuts open her arm and blood is gushing all over the floor. Edward's brother, Jasper, is trying to attack Bella because he cant resist the smell of her blood. This quote shows that Edward is willing to die for Bella. He is willing to do anything and everything in his power to make sure that she is safe. This quote proves the fact that Edward and Bella, even though their situation is not normal and is extremely hard on them, is worth it because they love each other. Edward has always had a hard time being around Bella because he has to resist the sensation to attack her for her blood, but he is doing everything he can to be strong. Edward's family believes that Bella is the best thing that has ever happened to him and they don't want anything bad to happen to her, so they are all very protective of her.
As this scene goes on Jasper is controlled and he feels horrible about his lack of self control. Bella gets her arm stitched up by Carlisle, Edward's father, and is taken home by Edward. The love and dedication that Edward has for Bella really comes out in this quote.

Outside Reading #2

Today I started the book New Moon, by Stephanie Meyer, which is the second book in the Twilight Series. I have only read the first chapter, but the suspense is already killing me. The book starts out on Bella's birthday, she is turning 18 and is sad because Edward will always be 17. She doesn't want anyone to make a big deal about her birthday, but Edward and his family can't help themselves. After school, the Cullen's are having a birthday party for Bella. Edwards siblings, Emmett, Jasper, and Rosalie, give Bella a new stereo for her old pick up truck. Right as Bella is opening the gift from Edward and Alice (Edward's sister who is also Bella's friend) she gets a paper cut and a large amount of chaos breaks loose and soon blood is gushing form Bella's arm.

Outside Reading

Today I read an article about Yankee Stadium. As many of you know, Yankee Stadium is going to be torn down after this baseball season is over.
The memories will never die, just the house of all of those great memories. In this article it talked about the spectacular events that occurred at Yankee Stadium. Such as Babe Ruth hitting a home run in the first game every played in the park or when President George W. Bush threw the ceremonial first pitch in game three of the World Series in 2001, which was just a little more than a month after the 9/11 attacks. In the article it also talks about the other events, not relating to baseball, that have occurred there. Such as Pope Benedict XVI, Paul VI, and John Paul II each gave speeches on the field or the boxing championships that have happened there. Yankee Stadium has been renovated and updated throughout its life, but all of the memories that happened there are still within the walls and seats of the stadium.

Favorite Book Discussion: Twilight

Twilight by Stephanie Meyer is definitely my favorite book of all time. It is about a teenage girl named Bella, who moves to Forks to live with her dad and while she is there she meets an unexpected group of people. From the start Bella knows that there is something strange, but intriging about this group of students at school. She sits by one of these students in science and he gives of this aroma that makes you always want to be by him. As the year goes on Edward Cullen, who is her lab partner, saves her life several times. Bella wants to be with Edward, but he says its safer for her to not be with him. Bella doesn't understand why. Even though Edward thinks its dangerous for them to be together, they can't help how they feel. Bella soon figures out that Edward isn't human. Throughout the rest of the book, Bella and Edward come across road blocks that threaten their lives and Edward's secret.
I am sure almost every girl in class has read this book, but if you haven't you should. The suspense is never ending and the plot is full of events.
Has anyone read any of the other books in the series? If you have what did you think about them?

Athletic

Sports are a big part of my life and I always enjoy participating in them. I have grown up with a family that loves to be outside in the winter and I have followed in my family’s footsteps. During the winter I ski and snowboard every week. I am a lot better at skiing, but snowboarding is a challenge I greatly welcome. I have had the experience of skiing in Vail and Beaver Creek with my family. The runs were more challenging, but it was an experience I will never forget. I also enjoy going on bike rides and walks. My bike is my transportation to almost everywhere, so I am glad that I enjoy it. Walking around Lake Calhoun is something I always do with my mom. Walks are a great way to be outside whether it is sunny or rainy. Biking and walking are relaxing and fun to do with others. My main sport is fast pitch softball. I play all year round and I really enjoy it. It’s always a blast at tournaments when I get to spend time with my team and have a great time playing the game. Just like any other sport there are practices that are not always the most fun, but they make you better as a player and as a team. I get better every year, which makes softball worth all of the effort I put into it. I enjoy sports so much because you can always get better and have fun. Calendar
